PM Social Products
(2026 Edition)

Most social apps never make it past their first 18 months because cold start โ€” not growth โ€” is the real bottleneck: the first 100,000 users matter more than the next 10 million, and networks need content supply and graph density (7+ friends) before demand follows. PMs watch time spent per DAU, the creator-to-consumer content ratio, friend-count distribution, and reports per 1,000 pieces of content as a trust signal.

FAQ

Can new social networks still break through in 2026?

Yes, but rarely from zero. Bluesky (Twitter refugees), BeReal (anti-curation niche), and Substack Notes (creator-led) all started from existing communities. Brand-new networks without an existing community to transplant have historically failed. Niche-first, general later is the only proven path.
